Guest as underwater photographer at the Underwater Rugby in Lucerne
On November 2, 2019 I was allowed to accompany the UWR tournament “Water Tower Cup” with my underwater camera.
How all happened:
All activities in and on the water have always fascinated me. Already as a teenager I was active with the DLRG and spent my weekends frequently as a lifeguard on the water rescue station Sandhausen in Berlin. Later on I started scuba diving and freediving.
What am I trying to say? Now when an Aquarius lives so far away from the sea, he has to be creative. So I looked for further possibilities to photograph under water beside the under water portrait photography.
Since I took part a long time ago in a test training in the underwater rugby at the SLRG Luzern, it was an obvious idea to photograph a UWR game. The Water Tower Cup on 2 November 2019 in Halllenbad Allmend was the perfect opportunity for this. Ten teams competed against each other and the team from Basel was the winner of this tournament. At the end you will find a link toi the SLRG report.
I was fascinated by the endurance and speed of this game and enjoyed being so close as an underwater photographer. For the game, the diving pool was divided into a playing field and a side strip in which at least one of the referees and the underwater photographer were positioned. That was my dilemma, too. Left and right this strip had to be kept additionally free for the substitutes and thus a relatively small radius of action resulted with which I still had to pay attention not to obstruct the referee.
In general, it is the underwater photography of course it is always desirable to be as close as possible to the motif in order to preserve as strong colours as possible. Furthermore, the suspended particles in the water strongly cloud the resultate.
For this reason, the photos taken near the gate baskets are of inferior quality to those taken near the underwater camera. With some post-processing it was possible to create acceptable underwater photos here as Well.
All in all it was a great day and really nice to be among so many water lovers.
